Brett Favre Doesn’t Owe Vikings Fans a Damn Thing

A common theme that comes into conversation with my fellow Vikings loyalists is that the now retired Brett Favre (allegedly) owed the Vikings the courtesy of announcing his retirement earlier in the off season so that they could replace him. I disagree.

In our society, three things allow you to do whatever the hell you want: talent, money, and sex appeal.

If you have one or a combination of these attributes, you are given the benefit of the doubt much more often than if you didn’t. That’s why celebrities, athletes, and socialites are given so many chances at redemption and forgives after transgressions that the average person would be vilified for (DUIs, Drug Charges, Sordid Sex Affairs). It’s also why they are coddled and treated with “little kid gloves”.

This is no different with Brett.

With the talent he still has left in the tank coupled with the fact that he led us to within one game of the Super Bowl last year, he was going to be given all the time that he needs. Concessions like these would absolutely not be made for any other players in the league not named Manning or Brady. Heck, Brett Favre could shank an undrafted rookie in the locker room with a sharpened toothbrush handle and no one would bat an eye. That’s power you can’t buy.

The Vikings should have seen this coming and been better prepared.

The facts were that Brett was injured, old, and wavering on retirement as usual. Their Plan B is the equivalent of having your 7-year old brother back you up in a fight against Chuck Liddell.

Childress must be feeling like Old Mother Hubbard, because there ain’t be nothin’ in dat cupboard. What he has left are: 1) A poor, poor man’s Donovan McNabb, 2) A guy who was QB at Iowa State (Insert LOL) , and 3) a guy who you drafted to be a WR. Heck, why don’t we see if Ryan Longwell wants to take a few snaps.

I hate to admit it, but this was one things that the Packers got right. 5-years ago they knew that Brett was starting to be towards the end, could retire at any moment, and drafted the uber talented Aaron Rogers (which is the Plan B Equivalent of having Chuck Liddell back you against Chuck Liddell). So yes, Packers, you got this one spot on. But you also have Miller Lite and piss in your own stadium seating… So one out of three ain’t bad.
Bottom line, it was clear as day this situation could have happened. The Vikings should have been more prepared. Now we are looking at an uncertain season which had earlier seemed like a lock. But if this is the end, as a Viking fan, I would just like to thank Brett for a hell of a season last year…

…This of course will all change if he decides to play. In that case, welcome back, Brett.
